Outlying Units of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station
Staff Employee of the Year Awards

Purpose:  The College of Agriculture and the outlying units of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station have established an award opportunity to foster staff development by recognition of exceptional workplace creativity, service and sustained excellence in support of academic, research and outreach/extension activities in the college and outlying units.  The objective is to encourage outstanding performance and reward excellence in staff achievements.

Eligibility:  All administrative/professional and staff employees in the College of Agriculture and the AAES Outlying Units who have been employed at least 1 year in a regular, continuing appointment by December 31 of the award year are eligible to be nominated.  Recipients of this award will not be eligible again for a period of two years.

Award categories:  The award categories and the employee classifications are listed below.

  • Service/Maintenance/Skilled – employees that are titled as Agriculture Technicians, Fisheries Technicians, Laboratory Technicians, Construction & Heavy Machine Operators, Butcher, Electronics Technicians, Engineering Technicians, Research Technicians, or Research Aides
  • Administrative Support – employees that are titled as Administrative Support Assistant/Associate/Specialists, Financial Associates, Lead Administrative Assistants, or Executive Support Specialist
  • Professional/Managerial – employees that are classified as Directors, Associate Directors, Assistant Directors, Managers, Accountants, Specialists,  Generalists, Contract & Grants Administrator, Communications Professionals
  • Teaching/Research/Outreach Professional – employees that are titled as Outreach Program Administrators, Natural Resources Program Advisors, Research Assistant/Associate/Fellows, Research Engineers, Student Services Coordinators, Academic Programs Administrators,  Distance Education Coordinators, Academic Advisors, Meat Lab Coordinator, Equestrian Coach, or AAES Supervisors

The Award: Recipients of each category will receive a certificate and cash award of $1,000.  The award is taxable according to IRS guidelines.

Awards Committee: The Awards Committee is comprised of a Chair (Human Resources) and others representing employee groups in the college and Outlying Units.

Criteria for consideration of the award:  The recipient of the award will have outstanding performance and behavior in the workplace.  This will include exhibiting professionalism with fellow co-workers, internal and external groups as appropriate, going beyond the “call of duty” and providing excellent service in the performance of their duties.  The previous year performance evaluation must have an overall rating of Leading Performance. 

Process of application and selection:  An application for Employee of the Year award shall be completed in its entirety along with a letter of support for the nominee from a peer or faculty member by the established deadline.  All application forms and supporting documents must be submitted to Dean’s Office, c/o Employee of the Year Award Committee, 107 Comer Hall by the established deadline.  Late or incomplete packets will not be considered.  The employee may be nominated by any employee (faculty or staff) but the application form must be signed by the supervisor and the Department Head/Chair or the outlying unit Director.  The completed packets will be evaluated by the established Awards Committee through a confidential process. The Dean and Director will have the final approval.

Notification of award:  The nominator, supervisor and Department Head/Chair or outlying unit Director of the recipient will be notified prior to the presentation to encourage attendance at the reception. 

Presentation of award: The Employee of the Year award will be announced during an annual awards event.  The recipient will receive a cash award as well as a plaque of recognition.
