Conference Series

The Butler/Cunningham conference series will explore issues related to agriculture and forestry, the environment, and rural life in Alabama. It was instituted by the present Butler/Cunningham Eminent Scholar in Agriculture and the Environment, Claude E. Boyd. The series is funded through a generous endowment by Eugene Butler and Emory Cunningham to the Auburn University College of Agriculture. The first conference identifies issues in the environment and agriculture in Alabama. Subsequent conferences confront these issues, looking for realistic solutions.

The button entitled "2002 Final Booklet" takes you to a page that summarizes the entire conference. The summary includes detailed material on most of the presenters, with their slides and other visuals. There are actually two final booklets for the first conference, one booklet follows the conference fairly closely. The other booklet summarizes the general condition of agriculture in Alabama, including some material on land use and taxation.

Specific Purpose of the First Conference

The First Butler/Cunningham Conference on Agriclture and the Environment is entitled "Common Misbeliefs About Alabama Agriculture". The following paraphrase from the brochure describes it. A full copy of the brochure, a registration form, and the results of the poll commissioned for the Conference (see below), can be accessed through the links on the left.

Agriculture is often touted as Alabama's major industry. Agriculture is indeed important to the state's economy, yet many Alabamans are not aware of the complexities of modern farm life and agriculture. Long gone are the days of 40 acres and a mule. Today's farmer must be a production scientist, engineer, accountant, environmental specialist, etc. Future generations will be even less familiar with agriculture and rural life in Alabama.

What does Alabama agriculture look like now? What will it look like in the year 2020? What effect does it have on the environment? How can the rural-urban interface exist in harmony in the years ahead, particularly given the issues related to the environment?

Even without definitive answers, these questions seriously merit our consideration. This conference wil help make all of us more aware of the state's agricultural industry, and help all of us gain new insights for dealing with current issues and with changes on the horizon. You can be an important part of the dialog on this subject through your participation in the conference.

Public Opinion Poll

A public opinion poll on Alabama agriculture, the environment, and rural life will be conducted with the assistance of the Center for Governmental Services at Auburn University. The results of this poll will be presented and discussed at the conference.
