Ornamental Horticulture Field Day Oct. 18 in Mobile

An Ornamental Horticulture Field Day featuring information for landscapers, nursery operators and others interested in the latest results of ornamental plant research will be held Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the Ornamental Horticulture Research Center in Mobile .

The event will begin with registration at 8:15 a.m., followed by the formal program at 8:30. Presentations and tours will be offered that address such subjects as the use of alternative media components for container plant production, evaluations of various fungicides, insecticide efficacy trials, information on new herbicides, details on alternative weed control strategies for plant nurseries and an overview of new herbicides for hydrangeas.

Also on the program will be information about poinsettia varieties, speeding up production of herbaceous perennials using night-interrupted lighting, plant growth regulators, liverwort control in container-grown plants and leaf miner control on container grown Satsuma oranges. In other presentations, program leaders will address why some azaleas are resistant to lace bugs, offer updates on Rhizoctonia web blight on azaleas and discuss the use of Zerotol to control foliar disease.

There will be ample time during the morning for participants to hear each presentation and ask questions. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m.

The field day is open to all persons regardless of gender, race, religion or national origin. It is co-sponsored by the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. The Ornamental Horticulture Researcg Center is located off Springhill Avenue in Mobile .
