Field Day Set at Horticulture Research Center in Cullman

The North Alabama Horticulture Research Center (NAHRC), located at 756 County Road 1466 in Cullman, will host a Vegetable and Ornamentals Field Day Thursday, June 24, from 9 a.m. to noon .

More than a dozen Auburn University faculty members and research associates will be participating in the event, offering information on a wide range of horticulture studies under way at the Cullman center and at AU.

For produce growers considering “going organic” with production, researchers will share findings on the use of cover crops during the transition from conventional to organic production. They also will discuss no-till vegetable production; no-till sweet potatoes in cover crops; the use of plant-growth-promoting bacteria in no-till tomatoes; erosion control using switchgrass, mimosa and blackberry; and the effectiveness of colored mulches and row covers in okra and cantaloupe production.

In the area of ornamentals, researchers will discuss evaluations of ornamental shrubs and shade-tree cultivars as well as hydrangea, lotus, hostas and hardy fern.

The field day is co-sponsored by the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and is free and is open to all persons without regard to race, religion, gender or national origin. For more information on the field day, contact the NAHRC at (256) 734-5820.
