Land Grant Alliance Expo Shows Innovations in Agriculture

AUBURN, Ala. — “Innovations in Agriculture,” a special expo offering information on a variety of agricultural and aquacultural crops in Alabama, will be held Thursday, Nov. 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Gulf Coast Research and Extension Center (GCREC) in Fairhope.

The expo is sponsored by the Alabama Agricultural Land Grant Alliance (AALGA) and is the third event AALGA has sponsored around the state this year.

The Nov. 13 expo will demonstrate how Alabama’s land-grant universities work to assist and promote agricultural development in south Alabama. AALGA, a partnership involving Auburn, Alabama A&M and Tuskegee universities, addresses opportunities and problems in Alabama’s agricultural sector, with the goal of improving agriculture by combining the resources of all three universities to address a wide range of agricultural and rural issues. A variety of joint projects already are under way, and more are planned for the future.

“Innovations in Agriculture” will highlight such commodities as pecans, peanuts, ornamentals, turfgrass, cattle and Satsuma oranges. It also will address new research in aquaculture, including farm-raised shrimp and tilapia, red snapper, oysters, catfish and bait shrimp.

Registration is at 9 a.m., and the program starts at 10 a.m. The schedule calls for lectures in the morning, a catered lunch at noon, and, in the afternoon, poster sessions and tours of the GCREC so that participants can see emerging ideas for agricultural and aquacultural production.

Cost for the meeting, payable upon registration, is $5, which includes all sessions and the lunch. The meeting is open to everyone regardless of race, gender, religion or national origin.

For more information, contact Billy Dozier at 334-844-3027, Bob Ebel at 334-844-3012 or Ronnie McDaniel at 251-928-2740. The GCREC is located at 8300 Alabama Highway 104 in Fairhope.
