Johnson and Flood Named Fellows in Ag Engineer Society

AUBURN, Ala. - Clifford Flood and Clarence Johnson, both of Auburn University's Department of Biosystems Engineering, have been named fellows of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE), according to an ASAE spokesperson.

Johnson, professor emeritus at Auburn, was honored for his superior contributions to agricultural engineering, knowledge of soil dynamics, excellence in teaching and leadership contributions to ASAE. Flood, associate professor and chair of biosystems engineering at AU, was honored for his significant contributions as an educator and researcher and his application of solar energy to poultry and livestock housing.

Johnson, who came to Auburn in 1979, taught professional engineering courses at Iowa State University, South Dakota State University and AU for more than 35 years until his retirement in 1998. Along with his colleagues at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Soil Dynamics Laboratory in Auburn, Johnson gained worldwide recognition for pioneering research in soil dynamics. He also was an active member of ASAE for more than 30 years, serving in numerous ASAE leadership roles.

Flood, who has been on the Auburn faculty since 1971, is an award winning educator and a recognized authority on using solar power in livestock and poultry facilities. In addition, he has worked extensively on measuring the equilibrium moisture qualities of agricultural materials. An ASAE member for 38 years, Flood has contributed significantly to agricultural engineering literature as an author and editor and has served in numerous ASAE leadership positions.

The ASAE is a 9,000-member professional and technical organization dedicated to the advancement of engineering applicable to agricultural, food and biological sciences throughout the world. To be considered as a fellow, nominees must have demonstrated unusual professional distinction with outstanding qualifications and experience in the field of agricultural engineering. They also must have 20 years or more experience in the profession or teaching of engineering and 20 years or more membership in the ASAE. Only about two percent of the ASAE membership qualifies to become a fellow.
