Leadership Development Conference Set Aug. 16-18 in Birmingham

AUBURN, Ala.— Educators, industry leaders and politicians are among those who can enhance their leadership skills by attending LEAD 2000, a comprehensive, first-of-its-kind leadership development conference set for Aug. 16-18 at the Sheraton Birmingham Medical Forum/Conference Center in downtown Birmingham.

LEAD 2000 -- with the theme, "Learning to Lead at the Speed of Change" -- is being presented by Partners for Social Changeâ, a new alliance among Alabama's three land-grant institutions: Auburn, Tuskegee and Alabama A&M universities. The conference is supported by grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Higher Education Program.

"Organizations and higher education institutions are experiencing an enormous amount and rate of change," said Donald Mulvaney, conference co-organizer and associate professor of Animal and Dairy Science at Auburn University. "The old style of leadership -- the traditional command-and-control system -- too often is ineffective in today's environment. At LEAD 2000, we will be examining and seeking applications of more relevant, highly effective leadership techniques."

The myriad of sessions at LEAD 2000 will cover such issues as developing a leadership attitude; applying principles of servant leadership to create more effective communities; using leadership skills to exact change; and leadership in the context of multiple intelligences.

"Anyone looking to obtain and share information that will help them become effective leaders, both personally and professionally, should attend this conference," Mulvaney said. "It also will be a venue for networking with a growing web of other learners."

LEAD 2000 is open to college faculty and deans, student affairs administrators, undergraduate and graduate students, educational organization representatives, industry leaders, business professionals, youth development personnel, politicians and any others seeking experience and growth in leadership education.

The registration fee for the two-day conference is $165. Enrollment is limited to the first 200 registrants. Continuing Education Units are offered.
