Rawls Appointed Superintendent of Upper Coastal Plain Substation

WINFIELD,Ala. - Randall C. Rawls has been appointed superintendent of the 735-acre Upper Coastal Plain Substation here, according to Lowell T. Frobish, director of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station at Auburn University.

Rawls, a native of Brilliant, has served as assistant superintendent of the Substation since 1990. He also served in a similar position at the Substation in 1978-79. Prior to re-joining the Substation staff in 1990, Rawls taught agribusiness at Brilliant High School.

The new superintendent has a master's degree in agronomy and soils and a B.S. degree in agricultural education from Auburn University. While in graduate school at Auburn, he served as a graduate research assistant in the Department of Agronomy and Soils. He is a member of Gamma Sigma Delta, the honor society of agriculture and of the Southeastern and Alabama associations of research center administrators.

In making the announcement Director Frobish noted, "We are pleased to have someone of Randall's experience and ability to serve as superintendent. His knowledge of ongoing research projects at the Substation will insure that this work will continue uninterrupted. Randall's experience in agricultural research and his experience in private industry make him ideally suited to the superintendent's position."

In recent years, research at the Upper Coastal Plain Substation has been predominantly livestock and forage. "We want to continue our livestock and forage work, but we hope to add some diversity to our research program," Rawls noted. "I would like to see more horticulture work, particularly fruit and vegetable research, done here," he concluded.

Another goal, says Rawls, is to get people in the area more involved in the research programs of the Station. "We want people in this area to know that this outlying unit of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station is here to conduct research to help them. We welcome people to come to the Substation, to visit with us about the research we conduct here, and to offer suggestions for things we should be doing," Rawls concluded.

Rawls, whose appointment was effective April 1, replaces Wallace Griffey, who retired recently as superintendent of the Substation.
