Soil Microbiology/Microecology Position Filled

AUBURN. Ala. - Protecting the environment while increasing soil productivity is vital to Alabama agriculture. Now a new faculty member in Auburn University's Department of Agronomy and Soils will be directing research efforts on providing environmentally sound methods for managing land and increasing crop production.

James A. Entry was named assistant professor in the Department in March, filling the position of soil microbiologist/microecologist, announced Joe Touchton, head of the Department.

Entry received his B.S. degree in forestry and B.A. in geology from the University of Montana, a M.S. in forest resources from the University of Idaho and the Ph.D. in forest science from Oregon State University. He comes to Auburn from a post doctoral position in the Department of Forest Science at Oregon.

In this position, Entry will be conducting basic and applied research through the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station at Auburn to determine the influence of management practices on soil microbes, with special emphasis on environmental concerns related to crop, forest and wetland environments. His work will examine such issues as transformation of nutrients in the soil and the impact of waste and pesticide materials on the land and environment. In addition, he will be teaching undergraduate and graduate level soil microbiology and soil resource and management courses in Auburn's College of Agriculture.

"I'm excited to be chosen as a faculty member at a university as prestigious as Auburn," said Entry. "My work here will include developing a soil microbial source that would estimate microbial populations in both aquatic and soil environments."

"The issues that Entry will be addressing are extremely important for Alabama farmers and foresters," said Touchton. "But his research can potentially benefit all Alabamians by improving crop production and protecting the environment."
