Rogers Garners Service Award for Fisheries Work

AUBURN, Ala. - One of the highest awards given by the American Fisheries Society was recently presented to Auburn University's Wilmer "Bill" Rogers. The Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station fisheries professor was given the S.F. Snieszko Distinguished Service Award by the Society's fish health section. The award recognizes fish health scientists for their continued outstanding contributions to the field.

The award for Rogers was a cumulative result of several of his efforts. His primary studies focus on fish parasites. He has described more than 100 new species of parasites; in work completed with his graduate students, the total climbs to more than 150. The descriptions for even more new parasitic species are presently underway. His work with catfish parasites has been instrumental in developing disease control and prevention, and allowing the catfish industry to expand in the southeast.

Rogers is kept busy working with the FDA--he is in the process of trying to get some pharmaceuticals cleared for use in fisheries. As part of this work, he is conducting safety studies on the target animals and humans. Tissue residue studies on the animals are also being conducted.

Rogers also initiated the Journal of Aquatic Animal Health, published by the fish health section, and is one of the journal's editors. He is a former president of the section.

Rogers received the award at the Section's annual meeting, held in Denver, Colorado, in July. The American Fisheries Society is an international organization with more than 8,000 members; more than 600 members are in the fish health section.
