Forest Economics Professor Pens Definitive Book on Softwood Lumber War

Daowei Zhang, a professor in the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences, has authored a new book about the softwood lumber industry that is garnering rave reviews.

The book–The Softwood Lumber War: Politics, Economics, and the Long U.S.-Canadian Trade Dispute–has been released by Resources for the Future Press in Baltimore, Md. It has been touted as "the authoritative work" on the U.S.-Canadian softwood lumber dispute.

As a forester interested in economics and policy, Zhang followed the dispute–dubbed "The Softwood Lumber War"–for some 20 years. His book is considered "an unprecedented, detailed evaluation of how the conflict began and how it was sustained for such a long period of time."

The book is available through RFP Press at www.RFFPress.org or by phone at 1-800-537-5487.

Alumni Establish Forestry Professorship

Auburn University’s School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences recently announced the establishment of the Dwain G. Luce Endowed Professorship in Forestry. The endowment is valued at more than $380,000 after contributions from 125 donors, including Luce, his family and friends.

In addition to funding the professorship, Luce’s ongoing support of AU’s School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences includes gifting an endowed undergraduate scholarship, donating funds to support the student services suite in SFWS’s new building and serving as a member of both the SFWS Advisory Council and development team.

Luce graduated from Auburn in 1938 with a degree in chemical engineering. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in the 82nd Airborne Division, the nation’s first airborne force, where he received the Bronze Star.

When Luce returned to civilian life, he became a bank loan officer specializing in forestland purchases. When he retired, Luce purchased timberland under the longstanding name of the family business, Luce Packing Company.

"Dwain Luce is the embodiment of a conservation-minded forest landowner," says Richard Brinker, SFWS dean. "He remembers the past, but always looks to provide for generations to come. His investment in forestry education at Auburn University through the Dwain G. Luce Professorship is the consummate contribution from a true Auburn man."

"Forestry, wildlife and the outdoors have always interested me" said Luce. "I even attribute some of my survival in World War II to my love of the outdoors. Foresters, despite some stereotypes, are true conservationists. Therefore, it is natural for me to support my alma mater, which I love, and the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences, which prepares the leaders who will care for the forests and wildlife in the future."
