Lignocellulosic Biofuels Workshop June 13-15, 2012

Highlights

This workshop is funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation - Energy for Sustainability. The workshop will bring experts from various sectors such as industry, academia and national laboratories, and identify opportunities and barriers related to biomass gasification and pyrolysis to produce “fungible, drop-in” transportation fuels. Experts in biomass gasification, pyrolysis, and logistics have been invited to discuss recent advancements in science and technologies pertaining to biofuels and barriers in making the lignocellulosic biofuels dream come true.

The keynote speaker of this workshop is Dr. Thomas D. Foust, Director of National Advanced Biofuels Consortium, funded by the Department of Energy, at National Renewable Energy laboratory.

Speakers will present their research on gasification, pyrolysis, biomass logistics including challenges and potential solutions and will include representatives from several universities, federal agencies and companies including Rectech.

The workshop will have graduate student poster competition with cash prize and will provide networking opportunities for those who are venturing into biofuels area.

Tours of the Center for Bioenergy and Bioproducts Laboratory’s Gasification and Fractionation facility will be available. The state-of-the-art facility housed bubbling-fluidized bed gasifier, F-T reactors, biomass fractionation unit and analytical laboratories to support ongoing research activities on biomass thermochemical and biochemical platforms.

Call for Abstract Submission for Poster Presentation

Undergraduate and graduate students conducting research on biofuels and bioproducts, and related topics are invited to submit abstracts for the Student Poster Competition on June 14th from 5:45-7:00 pm. Students working in both thermochemical and biochemical platforms are invited to submit abstracts. Please submit your abstract by May 15th, 2012 before 5:00 pm (CST). Submissions should be sent to Nourredine Abdoulmoumine, Ph.D student at Biosystems Engineering Department via email: nza0012@tigermail.auburn.edu. Please follow the following guidelines while submitting your abstract:

  • The abstract should include a project title.
  • Below the title, authors and their affiliations should be provided.
  • The name of the presenting author should be underlined.
  • The abstract should provide a summary of the project not to exceed 250 words.

Selections will be made by May 18th, 2012 and the corresponding authors will be notified whether their abstracts were selected for the presentation or not. Presented posters will be judge on clarity, research hypothesis, objectives and the content. The top three posters will receive the awards in the amount of $500, $300, $200 for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, respectively. Poster presentation awards were possible with the generous contribution from Agilent and Quantachrome. Presenting authors have to be registered for the meeting.
