Lab-Review Exam
April 11, 1996 Name____________________________
Circle your answers or indicate clearly which is your
answer. All work must be shown in an orderly fashion
to receive full credit. Carry answers to calculations
to three (3) decimal places (.763 or 76.3%).
1. (8 pts) Use your Swine NRC. How many grams of
CuSO4.5H2O would you add to a mineral premix so that
when 10 lb. of the premix are added to 1990 lb. of feed
(to make a ton), the Cu requiremnt for 40-lb. feeder
pigs would be satisfied. (Ans. 17.89 gm)
2. (6 pts) A steer in a digestion trial consumed 18 lb. of
a diet containing 2% nitrogen (both on a dry matter
basis). Twenty two (22) lb. of feces were collected
which contained 20% dry matter. The feces dry matter
contained 3% nitrogen. During the collection period,
the steer also excreted 8 liters (17.6 lb.) of uring
which contained 0.68% nitrogen. Calculate the apparent
digestibility of the crude protein in the diet.
(63.3%)
3. (4 pts) Use the Beef NRC. Calculate the %NFE in
sun-cured, early bloom Orchardgrass hay. Show your
work and label the values used. Is your value on a
dry matter or an as-fed basis? (42.5% DMB)
4. (10 pts) A pig ate 5 lb. daily (as-fed) of a feed
having the composition given below. Feces and urine
were collected as part of a metabolism trial. Using
data collected, the digestibility of various nutrients
were calculated.
A. Using the information given, determine the percent
(%) TDN of the feed. (73.3% TDN, AFB)
Component % of feed Digestibility
Water 11.0
Nitrogen 1.84 76%
Crude Fiber 5.0 22%
NFE ______ 88%
Fat 2.0 86%
Ash 2.8 50%
B. Is your answer on a dry matter or as-fed basis?
_________________________
Whichever it is, calculate the other. (82.35% TDN)
5. (5 pts) The nutritional guidelines recommend that we
obtain no more than 30% of our calories from fat. A
one-cup serving of whole milk contains 11 gm of
carbohydrate, 8 gm of fat, and 8 gm of protein. A
one-cup serving of low-fat (2%) milk contains 12 gm of
carbohydrate, 5 gm of fat, and 8 gm of protein. What
percentage of the calories for each type of milk comes
from fat? Even though we say "calories," what are the
real energy units? (Whole = 48.65% of cal from fat;
2% milk = 36% of cal from fat.)
6-7-8-9. A feed tag for a Goldkist beef supplement is
attached to this test. (TYPED BELOW THIS PARAGRAPH)
Use information from the feed tag and the feed or
mineral composition tables in the Beef NRC as
needed to answer the next 4 questions.
Don't worry about the fact that the feed tag is on an
as-fed basis and the Beef NRC is on a dry matter
basis.

6. (4 pts) What is the maximum percent urea that would
be in the supplement? Urea is 45% nitrogen.
(8.9% urea)
7. (6 pts) Assuming all of the phosphorus and calcium
came from defluorinated phosphate and ground
limestone, what would be the maximum percentage of
each mineral source in the beef supplement?
(Use the "max." calcium value given on the label.)
(5.56% defluor. phos. AND 2.85% limestone)
8. (4 pts) Monensin can be purchased from Elanco
Products as Rumensin-60 which contains 60 grams of
monensin per pound. What is the percentage of
Rumensin-60 in the supplement? (0.33% Rumensin 60)
9. (3 pts) Cattle should eat 200 mg of monensin per head
daily to get the maximum benefit. For feedlot cattle
eating 24 lb. of feed daily, how much of the Goldkist
beef supplement should be fed? (1 lb/head daily)
10. (20 pts) Use the Swine NRC. Formulate a swine diet
to contain 16% crude protein, 0.6% calcium and 0.5%
phosphorus. The diet will contain equal parts of corn
grain and wheat (soft, red winter), soybean meal (44%
CP), 0.5% salt, 1.0% of a vitamin premix, dicalcium
phosphate, limestone, and trace mineral premix. Allow
2% for the addition of dical, limestone, and the trace
mineral premix.
Fill in the table below showing that you have met all
the requirements.
