Description of A. convictus
Adult (Figs. ). -- Length, xx-xx mm (avg of 50 specimens, x.x mm). Oblong-oval; elytra and abdominal sterna reddish brown;
thoracic sterna slightly darker;
pronotum, head, rostrum, and legs (except tarsi) dark red to piceous;
tarsi, antennal scape, and 1st funicular segment rufescent, club and remainder of funiculus dark piceous;
vestiture above consisting of sparsely arranged narrow, white scales condensed on scutellum and in lines enclosing postmedian bare spot on each elytron;
ventrally scales slightly stouter and denser.
Rostrum moderately, evenly curved, width increasing slightly toward apex;
averaging 1.3 times longer than prothorax in males and 1.6 times longer in females;
densely, irregularly striate in males, somewhat smoother in females;
evenly punctate beyond antennal insertions;
basal half bearing a few sparsely placed narrow scales;
lateral rostral groove with surface granulate, upper margin directed toward middle of eye, lower margin becoming indistinct before reaching eye.
Antennae inserted at apical 1/3 of rostrum in males, apical 2/5 in females.
Antennal scape moderately strongly clavate. Funicular segment 2 equal in length to segments 3 and 4 combined,
segments 5. 6 and 7 equal in length, becoming progressively broader distally;
each segment bearing a whorl of long, narrow scales.
Antennal club elongate-oval, equal in length to preceding 6 funicular segments combined;
1st segment glabrous in basal 2/3, remainder of club pubescent and bearing a few intermixed, long, narrow scales.
Eyes convex, moderately free behind;
separated by distance equal to slightly less than 3/4 width of rostrum at base.
Head shallowly, sparsely punctate, surface granulate;
pubescence fine, sparsely arranged above, coarse and denser ventrally;
frontal fovea deep, elongate-oval.
Prothorax ca. 1.5 times wider than long;
sides rounded, widest at middle and slightly narrowed to base;
moderately strongly constricted behind apex;
disc slightly convex, closely and coarsely punctate;
each puncture bearing a fine scale;
punctures on sides of prothorax somewhat more densely arranged and scales longer.
Scutellum densely covered with coarse scales.
Elytra reddish brown; pubescence sparse and uniformly arranged except for denser concentrations around partially denuded spots on sides of elytra near declivity;
humeri rounded;
elytra slightly widest at apical 1/3 then narrowing to broadly rounded apex;
elytral striae with moderately deep punctures; intervals finely, transversely rugose.
Abdomen with sternum 3 distinctly longer than 4;
sterna sparsely covered with narrow scales, pubescence becoming very fine and hair-like on sternum 5.
Pygidium exposed in both sexes;
moderately densely punctate;
pubescence sparse, fine.
Legs sparsely covered with long, narrow scales;
each femur bearing a distinct, acutely pointed tooth which is slightly larger on forefemur.
Surface of tibiae granulate fore and middle tibia each slightly more strongly sinuate within than hind tibia.
Tarsal claws each slender tooth which is ca. 2/3 length of claw.
Discussion. -- A. convictus most closely resembles A. haematopus. Both species have reddish-brown elytra with the head and prothorax piceous. Characteristics by which they differe are compared in Table 1.
