My position involves a split appointment between teaching (40%) and research (60%).

My research appointment is with the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station and is
supported by the AAES and external grants. My primary research interests are in the
sociology of natural resources and the environment, focusing on (1) a commodity systems
approach to analysis of Alabama's pulp and paper industry, (2) the human dimensions of fisheries
and coastal resource systems, (3) the emergence of a grassroots environmental movement
surrounding issues of environmental and natural resource management, and associated issues of
environmental justice, and (4) problems of persistent poverty associated with resource
dependence.
I have been heavily involved in university governance issues and have been active as a consultant and
academic/scientific advisor nationally and internationally (details in curriculum vitae, below).

Part of this project involves working with architecture students of Auburn's Rural Studio who learn to be "citizen architects."
One group of students working on this project built a house using, in part, locally-sourced wood for structural support. The home is
one of a series of homes built for $20,000, including labor and all material costs. The story of this home's
design and construction

GRASSROOTS CLEARINGHOUSE: DIRECTORY OF
ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS IN ALABAMA
Alabama is home to a wide assortment of citizen organizations concerned about natural resources, environmental quality
and sustainability. This is a web-based directory of approximately 180 such groups in the state which is updated on a regular basis.
