Joseph Giambrone came to Auburn University in 1977. He has directed the research of numerous undergraduate and graduate students who have gone on to careers in Laboratory Diagnostics, Pharmaceutical Laboratory Research and Academics. Dr. Giambrone developed the first CD ROM in Poultry Health and Diseases, which is available from Elsevier, Inc.

EDUCATION:

1977 - Ph.D., Microbiology, University of Georgia
1974 - M.S., Animal Science, University of Delaware
1972 - B.S., Animal Science, University of Delaware

RESEARCH:

Dr. Giambrone's current research is on viral diseases of young chickens. He is working on infectious bursal disease virus (IBVD) and reoviruses infections. These viruses cause common infections, which can result in morbidity, mortality, and/ or immunosuppression in young chickens. He has developed improved diagnostic techniques to detect the presence of these viruses in chickens using the latest molecular biological techniques such as monoclonal antibodies, recombinant probes, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test and sequencing of nucleic acids. Dr. Giambrone has used these reagents and procedures to develop immunoperoxidase assays, in situ hybridization assays, PCR restriction fragment length polymorphism tests, and in situ PCR hybridization tests. He has also used conventional virological techniques to develop and/or test the efficacy of vaccines against these important viral diseases of chickens.

We are developing an edible transgenic plant vaccine against IBDV in alfalfa. We choose this plant over corn and soybeans, because it is easier to transform than the latter two. We have isolated the VP2 gene from an antigenic Variant E IBDV isolate. This gene is the major immunogen of IBDV and can induce neutralizing antibody in susceptible chickens. We transformed a T-vector with the VP2 gene. This vector was made for sequencing, so we could determine that we had the proper gene. We have also transformed agrobaterium bacteria with this gene and have used this gene construct to transform aribidopis, a common weed.
