SPRING 2010 tour leaves Auburn on Saturday 13 March & returns Saturday 20 March

Faculty: Dr. Curtis Jolly, Dr. Dennis Shannon, Dr. Elizabeth Guertal, & Dr. Joseph J. Molnar

OIA 108 Comer Hall 334.844.5518 molnajj@auburn.edu

DEPARTURE: Early Saturday 14 March 2009 from Comer Hall. We will travel by van to the Atlanta airport. The van will also pick us up in Atlanta and bring us back to Comer Hall on Saturday 20.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. View Haitian farming systems and understand their problems and prospects, particularly the context for hunger and food insecurity
  2. Experience and participate in life in rural Haitian communities }
  3. Contribute through service in schools, communities, or other local institutions.

The visit is organized in collaboration with S.E.E.D., a nongovernmental organization that operates a junior college, a demonstration farm, extension programs, and other outreach activities. Visit the organization's web site to learn more about their programs. Their guesthouse will be our base of operations in Haiti. Arsene Similien, S.E.E.D. Associate Director received an M.S. degree in Agronomy in 2009 with Dr. Dennis Shannon. Dr. Shannon and Dr. Jolly have extensive experience in Haiti, having conducted research on alley cropping and other aspects of hillside farming systems.

ELECTRICAL: Haiti uses 120V.

HOUSING: Hosanna Guest House is about one half-mile from S.E.E.D. The facility provide a safe and comfortable environment. The guesthouse has 25 bedrooms most with private baths, a dining and fellowship area, and large kitchen. (tentative)

CREDIT: Trip is organized as a stand-alone, non-credit activity. interested students may take the course RSOC 5610 RURAL SOCIOLOGY (3 credits) as a separate activity. The students who go to Haiti would submit a term paper based on the experience; nontraveling students would address a topic related to the subject-matter of the course.

NOTA BENE: Haiti is a U.S. State Department travel warning country (see below). As such, undergraduate students are not eligible to participate at this time. Graduate students and faculty must complete an additional form acknowledging their understanding of this situation. The Les Cayes area and places we will visit are quiet, but we monitor the situation up to the date of the trip.

TRAVEL WARNINGS: As many poor countries, Haiti has problems with social unrest and criminality. The US State Department issues warnings and guidance that prospective travelers should read and be familiar with.
