SCIENTIFIC NAME: Amelanchier laevis

COMMON NAME: Allegheny serviceberry

FLOWERS: Flowers before the leaves and are similar to Amelanchier arborea, but bloom later.

LEAVES: Alternate and slightly cordate at the base. Smaller than Amelanchier arborea and more pubescent.

GROWTH HABIT: Usually a multi-trunked large shrub that grows up to 15' tall.

OTHER: Hardy to zone 4 and native to low, moist sites in the south. The fruit is red and sweet and was eaten by Indians. Red pome that looks like a miniature apple. Usually has grey blotches on its smooth trunk and will do well in sun or part shade. Will also grow in planters.
