SCIENTIFIC NAME: Carya tomentosa

COMMON NAME: mockernut hickory

LEAVES: Odd pinnately compound leaf with 7 leaflets (may have 9). The terminal leaflet is the biggest and may have a sweet smell when crushed. Pubescent under the leaflets and on the rachis.

FRUIT: Rounded nut with a hard husk.

FLOWERS: Monoecious.

BARK: Narrow, grey, ridged and furrowed.

OTHER: Large imbricate terminal bud. Grows 60' to 80' tall. Native to dry and intermediate sites (tap rooted). Lives 200 to 400 years. Good yellow fall color. One of our most common hickories.
