SCIENTIFIC NAME: Carya ovalis

COMMON NAME: red hickory, sweet pignut

LEAVES: Alternate. Odd pinnately compound with 7 leaflets. Non-pubescent or glabrous.

FLOWERS: Monoecious. Catkins hang down in early spring.

FRUIT: Rounded nut with a hard husk.

BARK: Grey, ridged and furrowed.

OTHER: Grows 60' to 80' tall. Native to high/dry sites where it often grows with Carya glabra. Some taxonomists lump red and pignut hickories together and make one species. However, in this guide, they are treated as two different species. Good yellow fall color.
