SCIENTIFIC NAME: Carya cordiformis

COMMON NAME: bitternut hickory

LEAVES: Alternate. Odd pinnately compound with 7 to 11 leaflets (usually 9). Yellow fall color.

FLOWERS: Monoecious. Male flowers are catkins that hang down in early spring.

FRUIT: Large rounded nut with a hard husk.

BARK: Ridge and furrowed.

OTHER: Nut is bitter. Native to low, moist sites. Grows 60' to 80' tall. Has yellow, sulfur colored buds that are valvate. Tap-rooted, so not in the trade. A pecan hickory (apocarya). A member of the Juglandaceae family. Good yellow fall color.
