SCIENTIFIC NAME: Quercus muehlenbergii

COMMON NAME: chinkapin oak

LEAVES: 10 to 14 pairs of teeth (more pointed than other chestnut leaved oaks) and sometimes the teeth turn up (recurved). Black axillary bud is distinctive.

FRUIT: Acorn cap has warty scales. Sweet. Up to 1/2" in diameter.

BARK: White and flaky.

OTHER: Has a dark, black bud and the acorn cap has warty scales. Native to high pH soils (8.5). Will tolerate acid soils as well. Grows 60' to 80' tall.
