
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Quercus lyrata
COMMON NAME: overcup oak
LEAVES: 7 to 9 lobes and cross-shaped. Irregular deep sinuses below middle of the leaf. Lobes taper to the tip and are somewhat pointed. Yellow fall color OK but not outstanding. Up to 6" long.
BARK: Gray scaly to ridge and furrowed.
FRUIT: Acorn cap completely covers the acorn. Sweet. Round and up to an 1" diameter. Distinctive characteristic.
GROWTH RATE: 2.2 ft./yr. in our shade tree study.
CROWN: The species is distinctly roundheaded.
OTHER: Acorn cap nearly covers the acorn. Native to low/moist sites, but will grow on high/dry sites in the landscape. Round headed and transplants well. An excellent tree and one of the best oaks. A good replacement tree for Quercus nigra. Transplants easily.
