SCIENTIFIC NAME: Prunus serotina

COMMON NAME: black cherry

LEAVES: Alternate and serrated with glands on the petiole and may have red hairs on the mid-vein underneath the leaf. Up to 4" long.

FLOWERS: White in racemes in the spring. Held upright. Up to 6" long.

FRUIT: Reddish-blue in the summer in clusters.

BARK: Ridged and furrowed at the bottom and smooth near the top with gray blotches.

OTHER: Not a good landscape tree. Found on many sites (be able to identify it). The wood is used to make furniture and cherry flavor used for cough drops are made from the fruit. If a good specimen is found then leave on the site. Test tube cleaner like flowers in the spring. Wilted leaves can be poisonous. A member of the Rosaceae family.
