SCIENTIFIC NAME: Pinus virginiana

COMMON NAME: Virginia Pine, scrub pine

LEAVES: 2 needles/fascicle. Stiff and twisted. 1" to 3" long. Needles are separated at the tips of fascicles.

CONES: Up to 2" in length. Grayish brown. Will stick you when squeezed. Retained on the tree for long periods so trees typically have many cones in them.

BARK:

OTHER: Grows 50' to 70' tall and retains its lower limbs. Native to the eastern United States. Retains its lower limbs so it is grown in many areas as a screen (Atlanta airport). Can use limbed up or leave lower limbs. Used in the southeast as a Christmas tree. Can buy field grown trees balled and burlapped (B&B) or in containers since it does not have a tap-root. Is very drought tolerant. Commonly used landscape tree. Grows up to about 3000 ft. elevation. Tolerates pH of 4.6 to 7.9.
