SCIENTIFIC NAME: Pinus nigra

COMMON NAME: Austrian pine

LEAVES: 2 needles/fascicle and very stiff. 3" to 5" long. Clustered at the tips of branches.

BARK: Rough on the twigs and flaky on the old wood.

OTHER: Grows 50' to 60' tall. Needles form bird nest at tips of branches. Will retain lower limbs. Not native to the United States. Has a deep tap-root so use container grown stock. Cones are small, round in shape, and are held on the tree. Gives the landscape an Oriental look. Native to central Europe: Austria, Greece, and Italy.
