COMMON NAME: American hophornbeam
LEAVES: Notched or rounded at the base. Doubly serrated with forked lateral veins. Pubescence on the petiole and underneath. Divergent usually green axillary buds. Up to 5" long. Yellow fall color.
BARK: Exfoliating, scaly, and peely.
OTHER: Native to low, moist sites. Fibrous rooted. Good yellow fall color. Green and pointed buds that diverge away from the twig. Grows 40' to 50' tall and wide. Native to intermediate sites. Has heavy wood (40#/cu. ft.) with horizontal branching. A member of the Betulaceae family. Good tree that should be used more especially where an intermediate size tree is needed.
