
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Acer saccharum floridanum (Acer barbatum)
COMMON NAME: Florida maple
LEAVES: 5 lobed. Blunt tips. Short petiole. Pubescent under leaf and sometimes on the petiole. Leaves usually less than 4" long. Much smaller leaf than sugar maple.

FRUIT: Double samara.
BARK: Grey and smooth.
GROWTH RATE: 2'/yr. in our shade tree study.
OTHER: Looks similar to sugar maple but smaller leaves and shorter petioles. Native to south Alabama. Grows 50' tall and has good yellow to red fall color. Easy to transplant. Can tolerate heat better than Acer saccharum. A member of the Aceraceae family. Excellent substitute for sugar maple in the deep south. Often referred to as southern sugar maple. These can be found growing on the banks of Lake Martin in Tallapoosa County, AL.
