
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Liriodendron tulipifera
COMMON NAME: tulip poplar, yellow poplar, or tulip tree
LEAVES: 4 lobed and shaped like a tulip with no serrations and generally notched at the end.
BARK: Grey. Shallowly ridge and furrowed with pink tint in the furrows.
GROWTH RATE: 3'/yr.
FRUIT: single samaras in cone-like clusters.
FLOWERS: Tulip-like, greenish, and not showy.
OTHER: Grows up to 150' tall, but is a narrow tree. Gets aphids in the spring. Good yellow fall color that starts to show in late August. Fruit is a single samara. Has pretty flowers that are not conspicuous. Grows fast (up to 3' per year). Likes low/moist sites. Lives 100 to 400 years. Good tree for big scale areas (large buildings). A member of the Magnoliaceae family. Used very effectively to line driveway to Biltmore House in Ashville, NC.
