SCIENTIFIC NAME: Juniperus virginiana

COMMON NAME: Eastern red cedar

LEAVES: Has a sweet cedar smell. Leaves come out around the twig. Mostly adult foliage with some juvenile (needles).

BARK: Fibrous bark.

OTHER: Native to high pH soils (alkaline site indicator). Is very drought tolerant. Has small round blue fruit. Is alternate host for Cedar/Apple rust. Keep 1 to 1 1/4 miles away from apples or crabapples. Grows up to 60' tall. Wood is slow to decay so it is used to make fence posts and decks. A member of the Cupressaceae family. Heartwood is red hence the common name. In the book GONE WITH THE WIND this species was identified as the tree lining the drive to the Ohara plantation Tara.
