SCIENTIFIC NAME: Gymnocladus dioica

COMMON NAME: Kentucky coffee tree

LEAVES: Bi and tri pinnately compound. Can be 3' long.

FRUIT: Bean pod about 3' long.

BARK: Swirly and peels up on edge.

OTHER: 2 axillary buds at each node. Grows up to 60' tall and is very drought tolerant. Used most in the northern United States (Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio etc.). Has a bean pod fruit (Fabaceae family). Fruit has been used to make a coffee substitute during times when regular coffee beans were unavailable hence the common name.
