
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Prunus X yedoensis 'Somei yoshino' (Prunus X yedoensis)
COMMON NAME: yoshino cherry
FLOWERS: Single and pink in the bud, but white after blooming. Bloom is in early March before the leaves for 2 to 3 weeks. Very spectacular. Looks like a cloud has landed.
LEAVES: Petiole has 1 to 2 (could be up to 4) light colored glands at the leaf base. Margins are serrated. Leaf is flat and the tip is acute (comes to a quick point). Up to 4" long.
GROWTH HABIT: Grows up to 40' tall, but is usually 20' to 30' tall and wide. The branches become horizontal.
OTHER: Hardy from zone 5 to 8. Needs full sun or flowering will be reduced and diseases will infect more easily. The most popular flowering cherry.
