COMMON NAME: flowering crabapple
FLOWERS: White, pink, red, or lavender flowers depending upon cultivar on spurs in mid-March before the leaves for up to 3 weeks. Is a very prolific flowering small tree. Very attractive.
GROWTH HABIT: 6' to 25' tall and wide according to cultivar.
LEAVES: Alternate with fine serrations. Up to 2" long. Young leaves look purple on colored flower cultivars. White flower cultivars have green leaves. Leaves are usually on spurs.
OTHER: Hardy from zone 2 to Florida. Needs full sun, but is drought and heat tolerant. Fruit is in late summer and is eaten by animals and some people make jams out of it. Will sucker if wounded or stressed. Many cultivars available. Important to select disease resistant cultivars.
