SCIENTIFIC NAME: Malus angustifolia

COMMON NAME: southern crabapple

FLOWERS: Pink to deep pink in the bud, opening to white and is fragrant.

LEAVES: Alternate and finely serrate and may try to lobe at the base. Spurs may also have leaves growing from them.

GROWTH HABIT: Rounded small tree that grows from 20' to 30' tall.

OTHER: Native to Alabama. May have some thorns. Can get any number of diseases or insect problems: cedar apple rust, eastern tent caterpillar, apple scab, fireblight, insect borers, scale, aphids, and canker. Do not use in the landscape if possible. Is generally not in the trade. A member of the Rosaceae family.
