SCIENTIFIC NAME: Cotinus obovatus

COMMON NAME: American smoke tree, chittamwood

FLOWERS: Not showy.

LEAVES: Alternate and obovate. Bluish to dark green. 2" to 5" long and 1/2" wide. Leaves are at the ends of the branches. May have the best red, orange fall color of any small tree. Texture is like cabbage. Crushed foliage and twigs smell like Pine Sol disinfectant.

GROWTH HABIT: Grows 20' to 30' tall as a small, rounded tree.

OTHER: Native to north Alabama. If found in the wild, indicates a high soil pH . In the landscape it will grow in low or high pH soils. Pith is yellow and the twigs smell like Pine Sol.
