
SCIENTIFIC NAME: X Cupressocyparis leylandii
COMMON NAME: Leyland cypress
COMMENTS: Intergeneric cross. Very fast growing. Needs full sun. Easy to transplant. Grows up to 40' tall. Pyramidal growth habit. Widely used as a hedge or screen plant. Disturbing problem has arisen on this species. It is a fungus disease commonly referred to as bot rot. It starts on the lower limbs and spreads up the tree. This problem may prove to be very serious and reduce the number of trees planted. Original cross occurred in Wales in 1888. An outstanding specimen of this species resides at the Callaway Garden Greenhouse Complex. Atlanta and Birmingham have used this species as the hedge plant of choice in the ritzy neighborhoods.
