SCIENTIFIC NAME: Chaenomeles speciosa (Chaenomeles lagernaria)

COMMON NAME: flowering quince, Japanese quince

FLOWERS: Before the leaves. Depending on cultivar may be orange, white, red, or pink.

LEAVES: Alternate and finely serrate with purple new growth. Stipules (modified leaves) are kidney shaped in leaf axil. Up to 3" in length.

GROWTH HABIT: 3' to 5' tall as a small shrub with cane type growth.

OTHER: Hardy to zone 4. Will have some thorns. Does best in full sun. Fruit is about 3" in diameter and is not very good to eat. A member of the Rosaceae family.
