
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Aesculus pavia COMMON NAME: red buckeye
FLOWERS: Very showy trumpet-shaped red flowers in mid March for up to 3 weeks (racemose panicle).
FRUIT: 1" rounded dark brown capsule ripening in the fall. Poisonous if ingested. Thought to bring good luck to those who have them.
LEAVES: Opposite and palmately compound with 5 to 7 leaflets, reddish petiole and serrated margins. Glabrous.
GROWTH HABIT: Grows 5' to 25'. Usually very small when found in the woods.
OTHER: Hardy from zone 4 to 8. Native to dry sites and is hard to transplant (use only container grown material). Will grow in dense shade to full sun. Specify container grown plants for use in the landscape.
