
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Aesculus parviflora
COMMON NAME: bottlebrush buckeye
FLOWERS: White with 4 petals and in panicles. Blooms in May.
LEAVES: Opposite and palmate compound with 5 to 7 leaflets.
FRUIT: 2" long brown capsule ripening in the fall.
GROWTH HABIT: Multi-stemmed shrub. Usually between 8' and 15' tall and wide, but occasionally up to 20' tall. Spreads by runners and suckers.
OTHER: Hardy from zone 4 to 8. Native to the southeast, but is rare in Alabama. Very common in South Carolina and northern Georgia. It's buckeye is used to treat some forms of cancer. Spreads faster than Aesculus pavia. Will grow in sun or full shade, low moist or a high dry site. A member of the Hippocastanaceae family. Beautiful plant that should be used more often. Will grow in shade or sun.
