SCIENTIFIC NAME: Thuja occidentalis

COMMON NAME: American arborvitae

FLOWERS:

GROWTH HABIT: Grows up to 70' tall in a columnar shape. Some cultivars grow to smaller heights.

LEAVES: Dark green juniper-like foliage. Is coarser textured than Platycladus orientalis 'Bakeri'. Smells like mint medicine when crushed. Does not form vertical lines.

OTHER: Native to northern United States, so it is very cold hardy. Cultivar 'Woodwardii Globe' grows 3' tall and 3' wide in a globe shape. Gets brown in the winter. Cultivar 'Tom Thumb' grows the same size as 'Woodard Globe' but stays green year round. The globe arborvitae can be controlled down to 3'. A member of the Cupressaceae family.
