
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Celtis occidentalis
COMMON NAME: common hackberry
LEAVES: Alternate. Has an inequilateral base (elm family). Serrations start 1/4 of the way up the leaf. Has leaf gall. Three big veins at the leaf base. 3 - 5 inches long.
FRUIT: Red to orange berry.
BARK: Ridge and furrowed up to first limbs then smooth with warts.
OTHER: Grows 50' to 80' tall. Tolerates high soil pH. Some people think that it is not as attractive as the sugar hackberry.
