SCIENTIFIC NAME: Mahonia bealei

COMMON NAME: leatherleaf mahonia, leatherleaf hollygrape

FLOWERS: Yellow and fragrant in January or February. If flowers are opening there will not be a freeze that night.

GROWTH HABIT: Cane type growth from 3' to 5' tall.

LEAVES: Odd pinnately compound with 7 to 9 leaflets. Sessile (no petiole). Leaf is thick with an inequilateral base.

OTHER: Hardy from zone 6 to 9. Will grow in any conditions (sun, wet, shade, drought, high or low pH). Purple fruit in the summer that looks like grapes.
