COMMON NAME: shagbark hickory

LEAVES: Alternate. Primarily 5 (7) leaflets that are very rounded. Serrations may be ciliate. Glabrous or non-pubescent underneath. Leaflets are almost sessile.

FRUIT: Rounded nut with a hard husk.

FLOWERS: Monoecious. Catkins (male).

BARK: Older trees have shaggy strips of bark that hang down and are very distinctive.

OTHER: Native to high/dry sites. Has a tap root. Grows up to 80' tall. Trees often used by pioneers to identify good church and home sites. Good yellow fall color.
