SCIENTIFIC NAME: Euonymus japonicus COMMON NAME: evergreen euonymus
FLOWERS:
GROWTH HABIT: Grows form 5' to 10' tall and wide.
LEAVES: Opposite and up to 3" long with serrations starting 1/4 of the way up the leaf. Petiole and leaf turn up. Has indistinct venation. Thick and waxy with a crenate margin.
OTHER: Hardy from zone 7 to 9. Young twigs are green. Is drought tolerant and needs full sun or part shade. Can get euonymus scale (an insect that sucks the juice out of the leaves and can kill the plant). Powdery mildew (a fungus disease) can be a problem particularly if plants not in full sun. Oil insecticides are the best to use, but the scale is still hard to control. Because the insect and disease problems are likely, don't use large numbers in the landscape. There are several variegated cultivars.
