FLOWERS: Smaller than Camellia japonica. Depending upon cultivar, blooms are red, white, pink, or variegated in the fall.

GROWTH HABIT: Grows smaller than Camellia japonica.

LEAVES: Less than 2" long. Serrated with or without black glands. Leaves are thinner than Camellia japonica. Often the midvein, petiole, and young twigs are pubescent.

OTHER: Hardy to zone 7. Likes acid soils and part shade. Can be espaliered. Many cultivars available. Also often used as the rootstock for common camellia cultivars.
