
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Berberis julianae
COMMON NAME: wintergreen barberry
FLOWERS: Yellow and fragrant in the spring. Showy.
GROWTH HABIT: Bushy shrub that grows 3' to 6' tall with a stiff growth habit.
LEAVES: Spines along the margin. In full sun the leaves will get reddish/purple. 3" to 5" long.
OTHER: Hardy to zone 5-8. Has 3 thorns with barbs at the leaf base. Can be grown in sun or shade, wet or dry conditions, and high or low pH soils. Has dark purple fruit with waxy white covering that will rub off. A tough plant that can be used to control traffic. May present a liability problem. A member of the Berberidaceae family. This species regained a measure of its old popularity during the 1960s when Lady Bird Johnson got her husband to sign the Highway Beautification Act which brought about the landscaping of the interstate highway system. This species will stand that kind of neglect that occurs along the interstate highway system.
