SCIENTIFIC NAME: Aspidistra elatior

COMMON NAME: castiron plant or barroom plant

FLOWERS: Purple and near the base of the plant, but not often seen. Often below the mulch line.

GROWTH HABIT: Grows 2' to 3' tall with long leaf stalks.

LEAVES: Up to 3' long. Long green petiole and blade.

OTHER: Tough plant that must be in the shade. Spreads by division. A member of the Liliaceae family. Used in Mobile, AL as a groundcover under live oaks indicating how shade tolerant this species is. It is used up north beyond its cold hardiness range as an indoor plant. It looks somewhat like the indoor species, Spathiphyllum clevelandii (peace lily).
