SCIENTIFIC NAME: Agarista populifolia (Leucothoe populifolia)

COMMON NAME: pipe plant, pipe-stem plant

FLOWERS: Bell shaped white flowers in the spring.

GROWTH HABIT: Grows 6' to 12' tall with weeping form.

LEAVES: Alternate with very fine teeth or entire margins. Has a long and narrow leaf (5" long). Petiole will get red in full sun.

OTHER: Used to be in the genus Leucothoe. Hardy from zone 6 to 9. Young twigs are green on the bottom and purple on the top. Twigs zig-zag at the leaves. A native plant that likes full sun to part shade, acid soils, and is not drought tolerant. Can be used as a screen if pruned properly. If in full shade it will get fungal leaf spot. A member of the Ericaceae family.
