SCIENTIFIC NAME: Zelkova serrata

COMMON NAME: Japanese zelkova

LEAVES: Inequilateral base with single serrated margins (coarse serrations). Sometimes rough on the upper surface. Has a large pointed bud that diverges from the stem. Up to 5" in length. Attenuated tip.

BARK: Smooth and exfoliating revealing cinnamon colored inner bark similar to Chinese elm.

OTHER: Grows in a vase shape. Big, pointed axillary (divergent) bud that points away from the stem. A good tree because it is resistant to dutch elm disease. Lenticels are on twigs. Grows 50' to 70' tall, but is not fast growing. A member of the Ulmaceae family. Elm leaf beetle does feed on foliage: skeltonizes foliage (only the veins remaining). Widely planted as a landscape tree. Several cultivars have been released such as 'Village Green' and 'Green Vase'. Downtown Auburn as well as Atlanta have selected this as one of their major street trees.
