SCIENTIFIC NAME: Tsuga canadensis

COMMON NAME: Canadian hemlock

LEAVES: 1/2" or less in length. Have 2 white lines (stomates) underneath. Grow in 2 rows on the twig with a short petiole. Tapers to the tip.

BARK: Ridge and furrowed.

FRUIT: Looks like baby pine cone less than one half inch in diameter.

OTHER: Grows up to 80' tall and is pyramidal in shape. Native to north America and Canada. Cone is very small (1/2" long). Not very heat tolerant. Don't use south of Atlanta. Can limb up or leave limbs to the ground. Use as a screen or clipped hedge. Will tolerate shade. A member of the Pinaceae family.
